Policy costs on electricity bills hampering decarbonisation: Eurelectric
“Disproportionately” increasing electricity bills to cover the cost of renewables and social programmes risks undermining the low-carbon transition, according to Eurelectric. The organisation issued a report on The Benefits of Electrification on Wednesday 23 September. It said national governments’ dependence on electricity, rather than gas bills, to fund policy costs meant that electrification remained uneconomic for many investors, and that all forms of energy should bear the cost of the “energy transformation”. The report also warned that the current level of investment in energy efficiency was insufficient relative to the challenge at hand, and was slowing the rate of installation of electric solutions to replace fossil fuel products.
