Reduced government support a threat to community energy: report

Community Energy England research has hailed the success of community energy, finding schemes have collectively raised £190mn in investment. However, the group also warned that subsidy cuts seriously threaten the sector’s viability. The first ever Community Energy State of the Sector report showed that a total of 222 community organisations are now operating solar, hydro or wind power schemes across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with a collective capacity of 121MW. Community Energy England Chief Executive Emma Bridge commented: “There is a clear link between recent subsidy changes and an increasing number of failed or stalled community projects. These, or similar, support mechanisms are essential in providing the community energy sector with the security and viability to progress their projects and objectives.”
