Scaling up green business initiatives could deliver emissions reduction: report

The rapid scaling up of five existing private sector green initiatives would achieve a saving of 500MtCO2e by 2020, a report by University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) has found. Released on Monday 24 August, the research analysed five current initiatives including the Tropical Forest Alliance 2020 and En.lighten and found that expanding them could deliver emissions savings equivalent to one years’ activity from 130 coal-fired power stations. Nicolette Bartlett, senior programme manager at CISL said: “We are seeing a growing interest in pre-competitive collaboration within the private sector to help manage the complexity of global supply chains and increasing resource constraints. There are often sound business reasons for companies to want to do this, including brand and reputation building, getting ahead of or shaping regulation, costs savings and creating new markets for their products and services.”
