Shale gas could undermine UK’s emissions reduction plans: Committee on Climate Change

Shale gas exploitation on a significant scale will not be compatible with the UK’s carbon budgets unless a series of key tests are met, the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) has said. In a report issued on Thursday 7 July, the CCC said that emissions would need to be “strictly limited” during the development, production and well decommissioning phase, and that this would require tight regulation. Further, it said that the production of UK shale gas must displace imports rather than increase overall gas consumption, and that emissions from shale exploitation would need to be offset by reductions in other areas of the economy.
