Think tank backs power system overhaul

Developing a smarter and more flexible power system could save households £90/ year by 2030, according to Policy Exchange. In its Power 2.0 report, issued on Monday 7 November, the think tank said that the rapid expansion of renewables was creating challenges in managing the system, and that these were, at present, partly being met through the use of “dirty” forms of generation such as diesel. Among its recommendations, the report called for a review of the rules of the capacity market so as to ensure storage and demand response were able to access three-year contracts, and said that regulatory changes were needed to remove the double-charging of environmental levies on storage.
