Thousands of firms still not compliant with ESOS as deadline passes

The Environment Agency has confirmed that around 3,000 eligible firms remain non-compliant with the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS), despite the deadline passing last week. The agency said that, by 29 January, just under 6,000 companied had registered as compliant and that a further 1,000 had notified their intention to comply over the coming weeks. The initial deadline for the scheme was 5 December, but it was extended to the end of January in light of slow compliance rates. A spokesperson for the agency told Businessgreen: “We will normally use enforcement notices to bring organisations into compliance and only issue civil penalties in the most serious cases.”
