UK falling short on energy investment, warn engineers

Time is “rapidly running out” on securing the investment needed to deliver a decarbonised UK energy system, according to the Royal Academy of Engineers (RAE). In a report prepared for the prime minister’s council for science and technology, the RAE said that, while the system was currently on course to meet the targets set by the UK and the EU, progress would “only get more difficult and there is a serious risk of non-delivery”. It said the government should undertake local or regional whole-system, large-scale pilot projects to establish real-world examples of how the future system would work, and must drive forward new capacity in the nuclear, offshore wind and carbon capture and storage sectors.
