UK loses top 10 spot in energy trilemma index
The UK has fallen out of the top 10 of the World Energy Council’s (WEC) table of nations best balancing the challenges of the energy trilemma. The organisation’s annual report, published on Tuesday 11 October, showed the UK falling one place to 11th in the table, while maintaining a AAA rating. The UK was placed on the report’s “negative watch list” owing to the challenges it faced in delivering energy security, in part as a consequence of the vote to leave the European Union. The report further said that cuts to renewables subsidies had undermined progress towards diversifying the energy supply and improving environmental sustainability.
