UK not ahead of the pack on clean energy: ECIU

The UK is not doing more to tackle climate change and build a clean energy economy than the rest of the EU despite claims to the contrary, a new report has said. Published on Monday 23 May, the paper by the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) said that the UK was the fourth most advanced country in Europe in terms of the level of renewable energy capacity installed per person in recent years, but only 21st on the total amount on a per capita basis. Richard Black, director of ECIU, said: “The meme of UK exceptionalism is raising its head in the context of the Fifth Carbon Budget, with suggestions that we should reduce the pace of decarbonisation as we’re somehow ahead of our neighbours; but when you look across the piece, we’re not ahead, so the argument should logically go away.”
