UK to ratify Paris climate agreement by end of year

Prime minister Theresa May has confirmed that the UK will ratify the Paris climate agreement by the end of 2016. In a speech to the United Nations on Tuesday 20 September, May said that the UK would continue to play its part in the international effort against climate change, adding: “In a demonstration of our commitment to the agreement reached in Paris, the UK will start its domestic procedures to enable ratification of the Paris agreement, and complete these before the end of the year.” A Greenpeace spokesperson told The Guardian that May’s comments were a “welcome moment of clarity” amid the uncertainty caused by the Brexit vote.
