UK will ratify Paris Agreement “as soon as possible”: Hurd

Climate change minister Nick Hurd has refused to provide a timetable by which the UK will ratify the Paris Climate Agreement, but has said it will take place “as soon as possible”. Speaking during a debate in the Commons on Wednesday 7 September, Hurd said that early ratification of the deal was important “symbolically”, but that the UK’s reputation for leadership on climate change was not dependent on this single issue. Shadow international trade and energy secretary Barry Gardiner said that the debate over the agreement demonstrated divisions within the Conservative Party between those who viewed climate action as “just costly green crap” and the “few sane heads”.
