Over 180 hours volunteered at local charity

Haven Power’s chosen charity for 2018 is Eden-Rose Coppice Trust, which aims to transform neglected and/or misused woodlands into beautiful, tranquil green spaces. These regenerated areas are for use by people with cancer, or physical or learning disabilities.

As part of Haven Power’s commitment to Eden-Rose, staff volunteers work at Brickmakers’ Wood – one of the charity’s projects, in Ipswich – at least once a month. In 2017, staff also chose Eden-Rose as their charity of the year; they spent 840 hours volunteering – including unplanned Saturday volunteer days – and £9,700 was raised.

In 2018, employees have already volunteered 184 hours at the site, with another 450 hours planned. Here’s a roundup of what they’ve achieved already this year.

February

Glorious winter sunshine marked 2018’s first volunteering day, with our people prepping an area that – over the coming months – will become a wildlife meadow with diverse habitats.

The Haven Power team also added a roof to the log-store built by November’s volunteers (watch the 1-minute video) and a “bug-house” within the roof space. In addition, the February team constructed a hazel fence, measured up the new pond area, cleared rubble, built fires and learned how to fell a dangerous tree.

March

Our second volunteer day of the year expanded on what was achieved in February, as the team worked on the banks of the pond. They cleared the broken glass littering the ground, started importing the topsoil ready for grass seeding, and lined the pond with sheets. The aim was to protect the real pond liner, which the team also helped to put in place.

These efforts pave the way for the additional work on the pond that the charity hopes will happen on its public volunteer days (first Saturday of the month) and the forthcoming Haven Power volunteer days.

Another Haven Power team are due back at Brickmakers’ on Thursday 19th April – let’s hope they have sunshine rather than seasonal showers… although some rain could help make this artist’s impression a reality!
