National Grid, Mainstream Renewable Power (MRP), and REN-Portugal’s transmission and system operator-signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday 13 September to complete a pre-feasibility study for the development, financing, construction and operation of a 5,000MW electricity link.
The Energy Bridge project was launched in June by renewables developer MRP, which plans to start construction of the first phase of the project to export electricity generated from wind power from Ireland to the UK from 2017. The link itself will be independent of Ireland’s electricity transmission system and will transport electricity from Irish windfarms to the UK.
