Apprenticeships haven’t always had the best reputation, but that’s now beginning to change. The Government has raised the profile of these work-placed schemes for young people by upping the minimum salary to match the national minimum wage.
We caught up with one of our own apprentices, Lara Robinson – who’s working on a Level 2 Business Administration apprenticeship – to find out more about her experience here.
“I’ve learnt a lot during my time at Haven Power. Since starting my apprenticeship, I’ve discovered so much more about how a business works and what processes are in place to ensure it runs as smoothly as possible.
I’d say the apprenticeship scheme has exceeded my expectations. I’m quite a hands-on person and would much rather learn through doing rather than reading a book about it. I’ve been very fortunate, as the majority of my learning has come through doing the job.
I haven’t enjoyed the written assignments so much, although they’ve helped my learning progress. I’ve looked into how other companies use different processes to gain the same outcome.”
Lara went on to say: “My time here’s allowed me to understand what a proper job will be like, and has helped boost my confidence massively. I’ve also liked being able to earn my own money while gaining a qualification. This works well for me, as I’m quite busy in the evenings doing other activities.
I’d definitely recommend an apprenticeship to someone about to leave school, as I feel it’s been a very valuable experience. It’s taught me a lot – information I can take away with me. It’s also a good way of getting work experience on your CV and a qualification.
If I was giving advice to other people looking at apprenticeships, I’d suggest they didn’t rule out any options. I’d always said I’d never work in an office, as I thought it’d be boring. And now look at me: that’s exactly what I’m doing and I’m really enjoying it!
I’d also advise against just applying for one apprenticeship, as you might change your mind on what you want to do, or not be successful in getting a place on that particular one.
Lastly, make sure it’s something you think you’re going to enjoy!”
