Have you herd? Elmer’s arrived in town…
8th July 2019
June was a busy month for our Community team here at Haven Power. We saw the arrival in Ipswich of our sponsored Elmer and attended a World of Work student careers event at one of the local schools that we’ve chosen to work alongside and support. 12 volunteers also enjoyed (really!) some hard graft in the sunshine at our monthly Brickmakers’ Wood volunteer day.

Elmer’s unpacked his trunk
In last month’s update, we looked forward to revealing the design and location of our sponsored elephant in Elmer’s Big Parade Suffolk – a county-wide fundraising event for St. Elizabeth Hospice.
Now, we’re delighted to share the news that our elephant – called ‘A day in Ipswich’ and painted by local artist Ian Pointer – stands proudly outside Christchurch Mansion in the town centre. For those wanting to pay a visit, it’ll be there all summer through to 7th September as part of the Elmer trail… Don’t forget to post your selfie with our Elmer on Twitter – tagging us in with @havenpower.
To celebrate the launch of the trail, we held a number of competitions, including ‘Where’s our Elmer?’, in which colleagues guessed the location of our colourful beast.
We also dedicated our monthly dress down to the fundraising trail and St. Elizabeth Hospice, with a competition for the best-dressed bright patchwork team. Our Sales Admin team went the extra mile to win, after designing their own patchwork t-shirts!
Together, we raised £280 towards the great work that goes on every day at St Elizabeth Hospice.

Inspiring STEAM careers in the World of Work
As a Cornerstone Employer based in Ipswich, we’re proud to be working with local schools. In June, our Haven Power colleagues Liam Mackinder and George Taylor spoke to students at the World of Work event at Ormiston Endeavour Academy.
Attended by children from Ormiston plus Whitton and Castle Hill primary schools, the event aimed to inspire the students to consider STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) careers.
Liam and George talked about Haven Power, of course: who we are, what we do and how we’re changing the future of energy. The pair also ran a quiz that tested the children’s knowledge about electricity – then answered a wealth of questions. It’s even possible that the duo met some future energy leaders!

Brickmakers’ Wood
More volunteers from Haven Power went to Brickmakers’ Wood – our local sponsored charity for 2019 – in Ipswich this month, and certainly worked up a sweat in the woodland. While the sun shined, 12 colleagues got the buzz by creating bee hotels for cavity-nesting solitary bees to use as a breeding ground.
Working with reclaimed pallet wood, hollow stems and other recycled materials, the team’s creations really were ‘the bees’ knees’!

June results
In June, we raised £280 for St Elizabeth Hospice and this brings our fundraising total for the year to date to £3300.
Meanwhile, the month’s volunteering time of 105 hours brings our total number of volunteered hours to 542 hours.
Thanks to everyone for taking part and being so enthusiastic about our community work.
