A busy few months raising funds and volunteering: September update
9th October 2019
While our monthly Brickmakers’ Wood session – see below – was the only community activity in August, we got back into the swing of things in September. We hosted another pre-tenancy training session for the Stone Foundation, had our third quiz night of the year, and baked cakes for Macmillan’s “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” on Friday 27th. Read more about these community efforts, and another of our regular sessions in the Wood, below:
Valuable training for vulnerable adults
This month, Sophie Catling and Patsy Beaumont from our Learning & Development Team led our pre-tenancy training for the Stone Foundation. The charity provides housing and tenancy support for vulnerable people who have difficulty accessing or maintaining accommodation themselves.
Sophie and Patsy helped those attending to build their skills and knowledge around managing energy bills and payments – an essential part of setting up and maintaining a tenancy.
Raising funds and testing our knowledge
At Haven Power, we love to put our knowledge (and reputations!) to the test at our quarterly quiz night. There were nine teams this time around, including one from the Suffolk branch of our joint Charity of the Year, Mind.
A tense tiebreaker decided the final outcome and the winning team – made up of colleagues from Pricing plus Forecasting & Analysis – is shown below.
Our quiz nights are always entertaining – you could even say they put the “fun” into “fundraising”! This time, we were able to raise £100, which we’ll share between Mind and our other 2019 charity Eden-Rose Coppice Trust (which runs Brickmakers’ Wood).
All-action at the Wood
This month, we’re reporting on two volunteer days at Brickmakers’ Wood.
Back in August, 13 Haven Power colleagues were indoors building shelves for the kitchen and workshop areas. In September, our Finance team braved the rainy weather to make the decking around the pond safer with the addition of some wire meshing, and cleared out wood and other materials to make space for a new, much bigger workshop area. The team also cleared out the old tool store which will make way for a new toilet and kitchen area.
See both teams in action below!
Everyone’s a hero at Macmillan’s Coffee Morning
The end of September marks Macmillan’s “World’s Biggest Coffee Morning” – an event we like to take part in every year.
Colleagues got baking and brought in lots of delicious treats to raise funds for the cancer support charity. We were also celebrating the last days of our ‘Superhero September’ campaign (related to the October Round of contract starts and renewals), which explains why Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy made an appearance!
In total, our chefs raised more than just cakes – they gathered an impressive £559.34 too – a new Haven Power record in our support for Macmillan.
End of Q3 results
With the end of the year closing in, our target of 1,200 volunteered hours could be in sight too. Our efforts in August and September make our yearly total to date stand at 853 hours.
