One-fifth of FTSE 100 companies voluntary offset emissions

Carbon Retirement, the carbon offsetting company, have released a report on Monday 18 April which documents the state of offsetting in the FTSE 100.

The State of Voluntary Carbon Offsetting in the FTSE 100 showed 21 FTSE 100 companies were offsetting their carbon emissions and six of these companies claimed to be carbon neutral. Voluntary offsetting was confined to sectors with low-carbon intensity, such as the financial sector, where carbon offsetting is low cost.

Renewable energy projects were the most popular source of offset credits, they were purchased by 12 out of the 21 voluntary offset companies in the FTSE 100.
