Following re-election, Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond announced on Wednesday 18 May that by 2020 the country plans to produce 100% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources. Speaking at the All Energy renewable energy conference in Aberdeen Salmond pledged to move “still faster and further” to secure Scotland’s place as a green energy powerhouse in Europe. He explained that by 2020 Scotland could be generating twice as much electricity as it demands, with over 50% of this coming from renewables and the balance from other conventional and fossil fuelled sources.
